MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (AFP)–A spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban’s main umbrella faction, Tehreek-e-Taliban, claimed the group was responsible Monday for a suicide blast that killed up to 13 people in Lahore. “We claim responsibility for the Lahore blast. We will continue such attacks in future,” Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, spokesman Azam Tariq said in telephone calls from an undisclosed location. “The attack was to avenge (U.S.) drone attacks and (Pakistani) military operations in the tribal areas. We will carry on such attacks as long as drone strikes and operations continue.” U.S. drone attacks routinely target Taliban and al Qaeda commanders in Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal belt, which Washington calls the global headquarters of al Qaeda and lies on the border with Afghanistan. Pakistan’s military claims to have made big gains against Taliban and al Qaeda strongholds over the past year, following major offensives in the northwestern district of Swat and the tribal region of South Waziristan. Monday’s suicide car bomber destroyed offices used to interrogate suspected militants in Lahore, killing up to 13 people. It was the latest attack to target security forces on Pakistan’s cultural capital.
