Bernard helped the Canadians move into Friday’s final against defending gold medalist Sweden with a 6-5 victory over Switzerland on Thursday.

A day earlier she was quashing rumors that she had posed in her swimsuit for a photo shoot.“There’s no truth to it,” she said. “I can’t control rumors.”
Bernard is amused by it all, really. During a win over Russia on Tuesday night, one fan sporting red boxer shorts and matching body paint screamed “Will you marry me, Cheryl?” and held a sign asking the same thing. Bernard’s spouse approached the man and persuaded him to hand over the sign.

Bernard and her close-knit crew from Calgary have been nearly as dominant as Martin’s team, going 8-1 in group play to earn the top seed for the semifinals. Bernard and Martin are both 43, born a month apart in the summer of 1966.

“We were an unknown for sure,” Bernard said. “That’s gone now.” Teammate Carolyn Darbyshire, with a tiny Maple Leaf painted on each thumbnail, was headed for a massage Wednesday to prepare for a pressure-packed couple of days.
